Dr. Mathai Mathew

June 9, 1932 – March 17, 2016

Mathai Mathew, son of Mathai Easaw and Saramma Mathai, Idavoor Puthen Veedu, Chennithala, passed away peacefully on March 17th, 2:15 PM, at Holy Cross Germantown Hospital (MD) with his family beside him.  He was born on June 9th at Chennithala, Kerala (India). He had two older brothers, two older sisters, and one younger sister.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from University College, Trivandrum and Masters Degree from St. Johns College, Agra. He taught at the Catholicate College in Pathanamthitta for a few years and conducted research at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Trombay, India. Later on, he received his doctorate in chemistry from University of Western Ontario (Canada).  He did his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida (Gainesville) and then later moved to Gaithersburg, MD where he worked and retired from the National Institute of Standards and Technology as a Chief Research Scientist.

Mathew’s family was soon expanded by his son Sonie as well as his nieces and nephews from Kerala – Mathew Jacob (Sunny 2), Oommen Jacob (Sabu), Sara Panicker (Sally), Sam Jacob, Thomas Jacob (Saji), Thomas Jacob (Sunny 1), Thomas John (Babu), Annie Zachariah (and family) and Grace Mathew (and family).

Mathew is survived by his wife, Sara (Ammini), and son, Sonie.
