Mrs. Leelamma Yohannan

July 3, 1948- May 21, 2015

“I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies: and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”

John 11:25-26

Mrs. Leelamma Yohannan was born to Kannimel Parambil Kochukunju Gevarghese and Mariamma Gevarghese of Gramam, Mavelikara, Kerala, India on July 3, 1948. She was a loving and caring sister to a large family of six sisters and one brother: Chinnamma Chacko, Ammini Abraham, Thankamma Jose, Thoyamma Thomas, Pennamma Thomas, Kunjamma Gevarghese, and Thomas Gevarghese. After attending BH high school in Mavelikara, she married Idichandy Yohannan on January 15, 1973. They immigrated to the USA in February 1989.

Leelamma Yohannan was a woman known to many, and had many different roles to fill in her life.  She was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, caregiver, grandmother, friend, and for us, we had the blessing of being able to call her ‘Mom’.  Her love was boundless and her energy unmatched.  Mom was an inspiration to our family, and to those who knew her by her unselfishness, willingness, and dedication to loving and caring for those she came across in life.

She was a true ‘woman of heart’, a woman with great faith and left footprints and memories engraved on our hearts forever. Her courage in the face of adversity, and her inner strength was truly a blessing to us all.  Mom taught us the importance of having a relationship with God. She told us, “Without God, you are nothing. He is everything you need. You are nothing without Him.”  There isn’t anything more important for a mother to teach her children than to teach them how to have a relationship with God.

As a true believer, Leelamma was a member and active participant of St. Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church of Greater Washington, Maryland.  Leelamma enjoyed cooking, spending time with her family, and gardening.  Her unselfish character and love for others was felt by anyone who had the privilege of knowing her.  Although her absence will be felt by those close to her, memories of her will be cherished.  Her sweet nature and genuine concern for others, her loyalty to family, her sense of humor, and her strong faith cannot be forgotten.

She is survived by her children, Mariamma (Mini), Annamma (Manju), her husband, Idichandy Yohannan, sons-in-law, Salvi Puthussary, Daisen Jose, and grandchildren, Simi Salvi, Nimi Salvi, and Sneha Jose.

We love you Mom, more than you know, and we will continue to love you, forever-- plus one day!
