KOTTAYAM: Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, 72, Metropolitan of the Diocese of Kottayam, the beloved Mar Ivanios Thirumeni for many of the Orthodox faithful, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 7.30 am IST (Thursday, April 11 at 10.00 pm EST).

Metropolitan Mar Ivanios was at Karipal Hospital, Kottayam for dialysis, when the final moment of his earthly life pleased God Almighty for the last time. Thirumeni’s Deacon, Personal Assistant and Mr. Sasi, Thirumeni’s Driver, who had been with him even from the time that he had been Remban, were there to witness the sad moment of his passing.

Metroplitan Mar Ivanios was born on November 14, 1940 at the Keeyath family, Othara. After schooling, he did his BSc from Fathima Matha College, Kollam. For Post-Graduation in Hebrew and Syriac languages young Geevarghese left for England. While living among the Cowley Fathers he studied at the Mansfield College, Oxford. Also he took Masters in Theology from the Oxford University. He had pursued for Greek, Latin and Sanskrit as well during the course of his never ending student pursuit.

He got ordained as deacon in 1963 and as priest in 1973, respectively, through the hands of Metropolitan Mathews Mar Coorilos, (later on HH Baselios Marthoma Mathews II) of blessed memory. Thereupon, he served as the Vicar of Karappuzha Chappel, Kottayam. In 1979, HH Baselios Marthoma Mathews I of blessed memory professed him to the rank of a Remban.

Geevarghese Remban was elected to the bishopricate on December 28, 1982 convened at MGM Hish School Thiruvlla. He was subsequently consecrated as Episcopos Mar Ivanios on May 15, 1985 at St Mary’s Orthodox Church, Puthiakavu, Mavelikkara along with four other bishops, namely, Mathews Mar Epiphanios of blessed memory, Philipose Mar Eusebius of blessed memory, Thomas Mar Athanasios , and Paulose Mar Milithios. Since then, he was serving the Kottayam Diocese as Bishop. He was elevated as metropolitan in 1991. It is also interesting to note that young Geevarghese lived with the Cowley Fathers of the Society of St. John the Evangelist, when he was student at Oxford. When he got consecrated as Bishop, the name adorned upon him was also that of St. John, rendered in Greek Language though, Ivanios.

From 1971 onwards, he was teaching at the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, (thus even earned the virtue of being the Guru of HH Baselios Marthoma Paulose II). Metropolitan Mar Ivanios had authored a book, ‘Hridaya Sudhikaranam’ (Purification of Heart). His Grace was also a renowned devotional Guru!

Metropolitan Mar Ivanios served as the President of Malankara Orthodox Herald from 1985 to 1991.

The legacy into the profundities of Orthodox faith, tradition, worship, liturgy and life of many of the priests of Malankara Orthodox Church owes most to Mar Ivanios Thirumeni. In order to spread the radiance of Orthodox spirituality and monasticism Mar Ivanios Thirumeni founded a monastery, Mar Baselios Dayara at Njaliyakuzhi, Kottayam, where he used to live.

St Gregorios Church, DC family prays sincerely to the Lord God Almighty to receive Mar Ivanios Thirumeni with open arms and keep close to His Ever Eternal Bosoms!

Our Church was blessed to have a shepherd like Mar Ivanios. Let his memory be for eternal and he may intercede for us and the entire Church. Remember the departed father in our prayers.
